9/18/96: I have just completed a musical arranged for 2 synthesizers and percussion. In this task I used synthesized instruments with acoustic equivalents (with one exception in one scene). I do this because my training is limited and my equipment allows me to hear what I write immediately. I am interested in your reaction to using a synthesizer in composing for acoustic instruments. Ultimately, you should train your inner ear to conceptualize the sounds in your head, be they standard or electronic instruments, and compose accordingly. There are usually a few surprises when a work is realized, however; so if a synthesizer helps, use it and learn from it. I am impressed with how far synthesizers have come.
