10/30/95: Do you suggest any particular aria substitution for Rosina’s lesson scene (Barbiere)? I’ve always thought that this practice arose with singers who couldn’t handle what is arguably the hardest part of the role. I urge you to sing what Rossini wrote which is musically congruent and has many references to the plot (important, now, with the advent of supertitles). If you feel you can’t sing the scene, reconsider doing the role.
