9/25/99: What repertory would you suggest for beginning conductors (conducting small ensembles)? If your conducting technique is limited, I would suggest simpler baroque or early classical works (Handel, Cimarosa, Vivaldi, Rameau, early Hayden, etc.). If you have access to a small number of excellent musicians, there are works that are marvelous but require a greater degree of conducting skill and fine musicianship: Stravinsky’s l’Histoire du Soldat or Octet, Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire or Verklaerte Nacht, Strauss’ Serenade for Winds or Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. ©1999 by Joseph Rescigno.
