10/20/98: What is your typical day like? This is not a simple question since the requirements of operas and concerts vary a lot. Rehearsing involves working with the orchestra, soloists, and chorus—first separately, then together. In an opera production, I may also meet separately with the stage director and/or choreographer. I spend a great deal of my time studying scores. Finally, with two Artistic Directorships, I give time over to considering new artists and new compositions, responding to requests from the press, and meeting and supporting administrators, marketing personnel, and Board members.
