8/1/2000: How do you keep people from applauding inappropriately? For example, do you do something special to hold back applause near the end of the Tchaikowsky Fifth? Unlike some people, I generally do not mind applause between movements. Of course, applause before the end of a movement is quite different. Here a conductor or soloist can help by his body movement. For example, keep your hands and arms in the air. And do not exaggerate a pause to the point of encouraging applause. ©2000 by Joseph Rescigno.
